The CalCOFI program at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography is seeking a seagoing eDNA technician. Please see a brief description below; the official posting and application portal can be found here.
Scripps Institution of Oceanography and the California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations (CalCOFI) are applying cutting-edge molecular tools to better monitor and understand ocean biodiversity. We are expanding efforts to sample environmental DNA from marine environments by testing and deploying automated eDNA samplers. In this capacity, we are seeking a seagoing technician to lead the testing, troubleshooting, and deployment of such advanced instrumentation. The job will entail going to sea several times per year on CalCOFI and other cruises, learning how to operate automated samplers, troubleshooting technical challenges, and collecting high-quality eDNA samples. The candidate will work closely with the instrument developers and engineers to standardize and automate the sampling protocols. Additionally, the job will require close coordination with the other CalCOFI technicians to integrate automated eDNA sampling into standard cruise operating procedures. This work will support our efforts to develop a high-quality, standardized, well-curated eDNA sample set from ocean waters.
